New Amish Country Tour Gives Insights to Amish Women

ELKHART COUNTY, Indiana — Groups can meet real Amish Country housewives in Northern Indiana who do household chores without electrical appliances and run home businesses without modern technology on a new specialized tour with step-on guide offered by the Elkhart County Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Among the interesting women that groups meet along the Heritage Trail are Elaine Jones, who shares her secrets to baking tender cinnamon rolls; Carolyn Yoder, who prepares an original Amish “haystack” lunch; and Anna Yoder, who explains the process of turning plain reed into hand-woven baskets at Sonshine Baskets.

The tour also includes a stop at a white clapboard Amish schoolhouse with a buggy hitched outside, where an Amish teacher talks about the daily school routine where multiple grades are in one room, while group members sit at desks arranged in tidy rows facing a black chalkboard. Group members may even be rewarded with a whoopie pie as an after-school treat.
