New tours highlight Amish quilts and pies

Groups visiting Northern Indiana’s Amish country have two new tour options combining home crafts and cooking, thanks to the Elkhart County Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Delicious Stitches is a new tour that combines art and fun. Groups visit four Amish Country fabric shops to fill their special container with sweet fabric “cinnamon rolls” and get favorite roll recipes as a bonus.

Pieces, Pies & Posies combines a shop hop to four fabric stores with the excitement of gathering “fat quarters” for filling a pattern to create a “pie quilt.”  The tour also includes pie recipes and a Lang recipe card box to store them.

Combined, the shops visited on the tour offer tens of thousands of bolts of fabrics, along with generations of Amish know-how. Groups can augment the itineraries with related items including a Amish quilting bee, quilt exhibits and shows and nationally acclaimed quilt historians.

The new itineraries complement the Quilt Gardens along the Heritage Trail, an ABA Top 100 Event featuring 18 quilt-patterned gardens and 18 outdoor hand-painted quilt art murals.

“These creative tours are real winners,” said Sonya Nash, travel trade marketing manager for the Elkhart County Convention and Visitors Bureau. “They deliver multiple fresh experiences, offer new stops and include the best of Amish Country. Although they may seem geared toward just quilters and quilt lovers, the tours really have broad appeal for anyone involved in the home arts.”
