Art and Amish await in Lancaster

The Pennsylvania Dutch region is almost perfectly suited to hub-and-spoke travel for groups because it includes many smaller cities in addition to Lancaster. A group staying in Lancaster, a city of about 60,000 residents, can enjoy short trips to communities such as Bird-in-Hand, Columbia, Intercourse, Strasburg and numerous others. In total, more than a dozen towns constitute a travel destination that is laced together by centuries of Amish influence.

“Our three main Amish attractions — the Amish Experience, Amish Farm and House, and Amish Village — all do a wonderful job of interpreting the community and their customs,” said Cliff. “For a more intimate experience with our Amish neighbors, there are dining and interaction opportunities through Brunswick Tours’ Old Fashioned Amish Picnic, Strasburg Rail Road’s Dine With the Amish, All-in-One’s Church Picnic and Hymn Sing, and Amish Village’s Lunch and Learn.

“A theatrical show is a great way for groups to enjoy Lancaster’s creative side,” he continued. “Sight and Sound just finished a one-year run of ‘Jonah’ in December and unveiled an updated version of ‘Noah’ in March.”

Cliff makes a point of how accessible the Amish in his area are. They deal with many of the same life issues others deal with — including children who many times leave the order for a time to “sow their oats.” Such worldly experiences are allowed, but returning to the Amish way of life as an adult requires baptism into the faith.

“The Amish are not only happy to share their lifestyle, but they are genuinely interested in their visitors’ lifestyles as well,” said Cliff. “They’re interested in how other people raise their families, educate their kids and practice their faiths. There’s a real give and take that occurs in many of these settings.”

Faith-based travel planners and travel industry members who want to enjoy three days of Amish culture — and the area’s thriving culinary scene — can register now to attend the Going On Faith Conference.
