Go West in Oklahoma

[ Destination Kingfisher ]

Highlight | Cattle Trail

Cattle ranching has always been big business in this part of the country, and in the 1860s, the Chisholm Trail, from Texas to Kansas, was one of the busiest livestock thoroughfares in the world. Between 1867 and 1877, more than 3 million head of cattle passed through Kingfisher, Oklahoma, on the way to Kansas.

Today, groups can learn about that history at the town’s Chisholm Trail Museum, which is located along the historic route. The museum has exhibits and artifacts that detail the trail and the cattle business, as well as its impact on the surrounding area.

In addition to those exhibits, the museum has a pioneer village, with five original buildings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries: a church, a bank, a one-room schoolhouse and two log cabins.

While you’re there: In nearby Yukon, groups can visit the Express Clydesdales Ranch to have up-close experience with beautiful Clydesdale horses. The tour takes visitors through a historic barn and teaches them about the horse breed that has become famous for its appearances in parades.
