Huntsville, Ala.

Giving back
Youth groups can take some time to volunteer while enjoying the outdoors with the Land Trust of Huntsville, an organization that preserves natural habitats around the quickly growing city. With seven sites spread out around the city, the Land Trust has woodland and mountain properties where groups help to maintain trails and other preserved areas.

Groups can also enjoy a nature hike or other outdoor experience at the sites, among them the Wildflower Trail, the Blevins Gap Preserve, Rainbow Mountain and the Wade Mountain Preserve. Special events at the Land Trust sites include a spring jazz concert to benefit historic Three Caves and other areas.

Blast off
Since 1970, the U.S. Space and Rocket Center has been the country’s premier destination for young people on the hunt for outer space fun. Opened as NASA’s first visitors center, the complex has grown to include the Spacedome Theater, Rocket Park and an education and training wing.

Exhibits throughout the center use authentic space artifacts to tell the story of our nation’s extraterrestrial exploration. Young visitors will marvel at the Davidson Center for Space Exploration, where the Apollo-era Saturn V spacecraft is on display, restored to its original operating condition.

Groups can choose from a variety of packages at the center, which range from simple guided tours to multiday visits with experiential elements.
