If you remember wearing Buster Brown shoes as a youngster, you may enjoy an overnight stay at the Craddock Terry Hotel in Lynchburg. That inventive property is located in a former shoe factor where Buster Browns were produced.
“Craddock Terry was one of the leading shoe manufacturers in the world, and they had a plant on the riverfront in Lynchburg at the turn of the century,” said Courtney Hunter of Discover Lynchburg. “After the factory closed, someone had the vision to open it as a boutique hotel themed around shoes.”
The footwear motif shows up in various ways around the property. A larger-than-life model of a red pump hangs above the hotel’s front entrance. Guest rooms are decorated with various shoe themes, with items patterned after such striking models as Converse sneakers or leopard-print heels. And if you order room service for breakfast, waiters deliver your food packed in a shoebox.
Food-lovers will also enjoy a stay at the Craddock Terry, which has won various statewide awards for its dining options.
“It’s a trendy spot for groups, and you’re within walking distance of a lot of restaurants,” Hunter said. “The hotel has Shoemakers American Grill, which is casual fine dining, and Waterstone, a brick-oven-pizza restaurant that also serves beer brewed at the Jefferson Street Brewery.”
